Bordeaux: Heart of French Wine

Bordeaux’s legacy stretches back to the Romans, who first established vineyards along its famed riverbanks. Its patchwork of gravel, clay, and limestone soils—shaped over centuries by the Dutch-built canals that transformed unusable marshland—gave rise to iconic wines. Today, Bordeaux remains a reference standard worldwide, shaping wine culture with its blends, chateaux traditions, and global prestige.

Meet the Wines & Wineries

Château Tertre de Courban | Bordeaux Blanc | 2024

History: Château Tertre de Courban is the second label of Château La Galante, led by owner-grower Christophe Pinard. Descended from a family of Cognac winegrowers, Christophe purchased and built up the estate in the early ‘90s, expanding to 75 acres near Beychac-et-Caillau. The winery is High Environmental Value Level 3 certified, reflecting top-tier commitment to sustainable, eco-conscious farming. All infrastructure was personally developed by Christophe, from cellar to barn.

Tasting/Elevage: This Bordeaux Blanc blends 65% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon, and 15% Muscadelle. Grapes are machine harvested and cold-macerated before stainless steel fermentation and lees stirring, then aged on their lees until bottling. Expect citrus, white flowers, and tropical fruit on the nose, with vibrant acidity, pronounced minerality, and a lingering, clean finish.

Pairing: Perfect with creamy pastas, fresh cheeses, and potato dishes. It also complements seafood, light poultry, and vegetable-based entrees.

Visit:

Château Fonfroide | Bordeaux | 2021

History: Established in 1676, Château Fonfroide remains under the stewardship of the Dutheillet de Lamothe family. Its cellar dates from 1777, and the estate’s name—meaning “cold fountain”—reflects the natural springs that feed the property. Modern investment by Bernard and son Hughes de Lamothe in the late 20th century expanded the vineyard to 75 hectares and modernized equipment, all while maintaining classic Bordeaux traditions.

Tasting/Elevage: The blend features Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The result is a classic Bordeaux profile: blackberry, red fruit, and hints of spice and mild oak on the nose; balanced tannins with a smooth, approachable palate—ideal for daily enjoyment or casual pairings.

Pairing: Best with roasted or grilled red meats, complex poultry dishes, game meat, and hard cheeses. Pairs well with ragù pastas, or plummy, herbed foods.

Visit:

Château Marcadis | Lalande de Pomerol | 2022

History: Château Marcadis stands as a notable estate in the prized Lalande-de-Pomerol AOC, benefiting from the gravel and clay soils reminiscent of neighboring Pomerol. While the region was officially recognized in 1954, its tradition and familial vineyard ties run much deeper. The winery upholds classic approaches—using stainless steel fermentation and oak barreling to maximize their distinguished Merlot-led blends.

Tasting/Elevage: Deep, dark, and aromatic, this wine bursts with ripe blackberry, plum, notes of cedar, tobacco, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, with velvety tannins, flavors of black cherry, cassis, and dark chocolate, and a long, elegant finish. The blend is mainly Merlot (supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon).

Pairing: Excels with duck breast, lamb, hearty stews, game, and rich aged cheeses. Also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto or wild mushroom pastas.
