Burgenland: Austria’s Red Wine Heartland

Situated along Austria’s eastern border, Burgenland is the country’s capital of red wine, shaped by the Pannonian climate and centuries of shifting empires. Its vineyards trace their roots to ancient Celtic and Roman eras, surviving dramatic border changes and the turmoil of the 20th century. Today, Burgenland is celebrated for its robust Blaufränkisch and vibrant white varietals, blending old-world tradition with modern innovation.

Muenzenrieder: A Family Legacy in Apetlon

Founded in 1932 when Johannes’ great-grandfather planted the first vines, the Muenzenrieder family began bottling and marketing their wines in 1977. Located in the heart of the Nationalpark Neusiedler See-Seewinkel, their philosophy centers on low-intervention winemaking—strict yield control, careful cellar work, and a commitment to both heritage and the future. Each bottle reflects their region’s unique climate and character, passing on traditions to new generations.

2023 Grüner Veltliner DAC ‘Neusiedlersee’

Bright, mineral-driven, and aromatic with notes of citrus, green apple, and white pepper. Fermentation and aging entirely in stainless steel amplify the wine’s freshness and crisp acidity. Pair with grilled asparagus, seafood, or herb salads for a truly refreshing match.

2021 Cabernet Franc Reserve

Aromatic, dense, and deeply colored, this wine features blackberry, violet, and earthy spice, supported by structured yet smooth tannins. 2021 Heideboden ‘Reserve’ Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Merlot

Michael’s culinary adventures began at the age of 7, helping his Grandmother make her famous homemade pasta. The restaurant bug bit him hard, and by the age of 17 he was already managing pizzerias, and creating his own dishes. After college he got into advertising and marketing, launching a successful artist management firm. The fine dining scene still had a hold on him though, so in 2011 it was time to jump back in. He got serious about wine when he started managing some of the hottest restaurants in Flagstaff, Arizona. He became a Certified Specialist of Wine through the Society of Wine Educators in 2019, and he passed his Certified Sommelier course through the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2022. An accomplished photographer as well, Michael’s work has appeared in books, magazines, and galleries around the world.
